From the Willamette Week: Halloween used to be so simple. As a kid, my mother transformed me into plenty of things that filled me with joy: a strawberry, a ladybug, an angel with devil horns and a barbed tail. She had a knack for costume making (my brother’s Venkman costume featured a damn-near-exact replica proton pack), and as long as I made it to the Brewsters’ house in time for a homemade popcorn ball, all was right with the world. In college, I learned the fine art of Halloween sluttery: Pick out a headband decorated with horns, ears, antennae or the like; couple it with something tight, shiny, short, etc. and—voilà! But what’s a gal to do when she inevitably outgrows fishnets and Natural Ice? A grown-up Halloween can mean a lot of things: If you have kids, break out the Simplicity patterns and dress ’em up yourself; if you’re a homeowner, employ fake blood and yard decorations to give your trick-or-treaters a gory scare. But if you’re an apartment-dwelling, childless twentysomething like myself (and many other Portlanders), these aren’t realistic options—which is why I ended up at the Mission Theater for Mood Area 52’s live scoring of F.W. Murnau’s classic vampire flick, Nosferatu, this Halloween. As ghouls and mice, starlets and beatniks filed into the 200-capacity hall, Michael Roderick’s Eugene-based, klezmer-tinged neo-tango ensemble, Mood Area 52—which holds the title for most mismatched band name, as there are no trippy light shows or spacey keyboards to be found—ushered in the evening. Roderick, seated on a tiny stool and donning a sort of mad circus ringleader getup (tailored suit, dark-circled eyes, tall hat, unruly beard), teetered on the edge of the stage, roiling accordion in hand. Later, he took to shouting chanty verses at the crowd, channeling the gruff spirit of Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse’s “March Into the Sea.” icon Story continues below advertisement advertisement When Nosferatu finally began, the band melted skillfully into the background; it was so subtle I could have sworn actual sound effects, like creaking-door and wind noises, were part of the film, even though I knew better. But Mood Area 52—which has also lent its sound (a melding of tango with everything from electronic beats and surf guitar to Roderick’s masterfully played cornet) to British sci-fi flick La Jetée and several Buster Keaton shorts—also swelled and shattered at all the right moments; it created tension and drama in a film that, though quite entertaining, does have dull, lagging moments. Even when vocalist Marietta Bonaventure sang intermittently, the startling sound of her voice quickly and appropriately blended into the experience as a whole. And though I expected the event—with its mature soundtrack, ornate venue and seated, wine-drinking crowd—to make for a sophisticated way to appreciate my favorite holiday, I couldn’t help but grin and giggle with delight at every one of Count Orlok’s creepy moves or drummer James West’s spooky accoutrements. I was even a bit disappointed to discover that Roderick doesn’t usually dress and act like the crazed conductor he played last Wednesday night. Maybe I don’t want to grow up after all.

Parisian Naïm Amor along with band mates Tasha Bundy and Nathan Sabatino enlisted the producing skills of John Parish for his first album, "Mistake Love" (2004) and those of Calexico's Joey Burns for his second, "Sanguine" (2005), a mature, French odd pop album recorded with both Burns and drummer John Convertino. Naïm Amor's previous incarnation, Amor Belhoom Duo, saw him collaborate with Calexico (album "ABBC"), release two albums on Carrot Top Records and tour the US and Europe with The Handsome Family, Calla, David Grubbs, Calexico, Miossec... In addition to AMOR, Naïm records an ongoing series of instrumental albums: "Soundtracks: Volume One" (FilmGuerrero, 2002) and "Soundtracks: Volume Two" (Howe Gelb's OWOM Records, 2004). Naïm has recorded with Devotchka, Marie Frank, Howe Gelb, Calexico, Pieta Brown, Neko Case, John Convertino... and composed for Marianne Dissard and Françoiz Breut.

* Press Release for MA52 Show Title: Cincinnatus “Joachim” Heine Miller’s Century Venue: The Shedd Date: May 26, 2007 Time: 7:30 PM Tickets available through OFAM Cincinnatus “Joachim” Heine Miller’s Century Mood Area 52, a Eugene sextet organized by Michael Roderick, featuring accordion, strings, vocals, and percussion, performs regularly in the northwest, often crafting specific shows built around original concepts and themes. Their latest exclusive concept show, “Cincinnatus ‘Joachim’ Heine Miller’s Century”, will fill the stage of The Shedd on Saturday, May 26. This is a turn of the century multi-media show featuring stories, period-specific sets, and 21 original, new songs inspired by “Nat” Miller and the strange and unusual events in Oregon history that took place during his lifetime. Cincinnatus Heine Miller, the son of Indiana Quaker school teachers, settled in Oregon in the early 19th century. Inspired by trappers and mountain men, he set off on a life of folly that rivals that of the Baron Munchausen in its audacity and romanticism. As a horse camp cook he gave himself scurvy. He was shot in the mouth with an arrow, stole horses, married and betrayed a native american woman, became an Oregon attorney and judge with dubious credentials, edited Eugene’s controversial first newspaper, married a young poet, took the name of a renowned Mexican rebel “Joaquin,” became an internationally renowned poet and charlatan, inspired (or was inspired by) the characters “Judge Roy Bean” and “Wild Bill Cody,” and built an expansive retreat in the hills of San Francisco that is now a cherished public park (where he had himself ceremonially burned). His life, its audacity, zest, and depravity was the perfect jumping off point for Mood Area 52’s latest creative quest. Roderick dragged the band on historical field trips, did research, and along with Amy Danziger and Marietta Bonaventure composed songs about famous train robberies, stories of Native American resistance, the massacre of Chinese immigrants, famous ghosts and mutants, pioneer women, prostitution, political corruption in the early 20th century, Rom Gypsies, families driven mad by the sea, and young men who were “Shangaied” into forced maritime service. Mood area 52 is Michael Roderick on accordion and vocals, Amy Danziger on cello, Marietta Bonaventure on vocals, James West on drums, Billy Barnett on Guitar, and Sylvain Duplant on Bass. A detailed program will provide lyrics, historical asides, and, time permitting, a CD featuring a few of the show’s songs. Mood Area 52’s CD’s and merchandise will be available in the lobby. the show starts at 7:30 and features two 45 minute sets with a 15 minute intermission. Much of this new material will work its way into Mood Area 52’s upcoming album, tentatively entitled “First in Line to Get Stuck With a Pin.”
